Roadside assistance explained: what’s included and what isn’t

A car is at the side of the road after the couple driving it broke down.
Roadside assistance will provide cover when you break down away from home.

Breaking down is one of those things you never really expect to happen. You set off thinking about where you’re going, what time you’ll get there, and whether you remembered everything – then, you’re at the side of the road, hazards flashing, wondering what to do next. That’s exactly where roadside assistance can help.

When you buy breakdown cover, roadside assistance is usually included across different vehicle cover levels. It’s there to help when your vehicle breaks down away from home – typically more than a quarter of a mile from home. If your vehicle can’t be repaired at the roadside, most policies will include towing it to the nearest garage. There are, however, some optional extras that cover you in different situations – here’s what you need to know.

What does roadside assistance include?

Roadside assistance, or rescue cover, is the starting point for breakdown cover.

It usually includes assistance if you break down more than a quarter of a mile from home — but policy details can vary, so it’s worth checking your cover. Technicians come out, inspect the vehicle, and try to get you moving again. Sometimes, the problem can be sorted there and then – which is always the best outcome.

However, if they can’t fix your vehicle at the roadside, they’ll usually tow it to the nearest garage. Double check that your roadside assistance includes unlimited callouts, or any restrictions around reporting the same problem again within set periods of time – often 28 days.

Roadside assistance covers breakdowns away from home, but it doesn’t usually include:

  • breakdowns at home
  • national recovery
  • onward travel

Does roadside assistance cover breakdowns at home?

Breakdowns don’t always happen halfway through a journey. Sometimes your vehicle won’t start before you’ve even left the driveway. This is where you’ll need specific additional cover attached to your breakdown policy.

That means if your vehicle breaks down at your home address, someone will be on hand to come to help there too.

It’s a useful option if you’d rather not take the risk of being stuck before your day’s even started. After all, a breakdown on the driveway can be just as stressful as one on the roadside, especially when you’ve got somewhere to be.

What is national recovery and when might you need it?

Sometimes, a tow to the nearest garage isn’t what you need. Maybe you’re miles from home, your vehicle can’t be fixed locally, and you need a way to get yourself, your passengers, and your vehicle somewhere more practical.

That’s what national recovery cover is for.

Look for options that include national vehicle recovery. If your vehicle can’t be fixed locally, the team should take you, your vehicle, and your passengers to a UK destination of your choice. There are sometimes limits – such as if the breakdown is caused by a flat or damaged tyre – so it’s worth checking the specifics with your roadside assistance policy provider.

What is onward travel cover?

A breakdown can disrupt your plans, especially if you’re travelling for work, heading on holiday, or trying to get to an appointment.

That’s why some breakdown policies include onward travel. If your vehicle can’t be fixed the same day, some providers will help arrange a hire car, alternative transport, or accommodation if you need it.

Do you need European breakdown cover?

If you’re driving beyond the UK, you’ll want to think about European cover. This is often fixed for a set period of driving within Europe, and can include a number of EU countries as well as countries or territories within Continental Europe, such as:

  • Andorra
  • Gibraltar
  • Liechtenstein
  • Monaco
  • Norway
  • San Marino
  • Switzerland
  • Turkey*, including Üsküdar
  • Balearics
  • Canary Isles
  • Corsica
  • Sardinia
  • Sicily

Choosing the right level of breakdown cover

Ultimately, the right cover depends on the journeys you make. A breakdown can turn an ordinary day into a stressful one very quickly. It can leave you needing help to continue your journey, especially if you’re far from home, travelling with family, or trying to get somewhere important.

That’s why having breakdown cover matters. It’s not just about getting a tow, or having someone look under the bonnet. It’s about knowing you’ll have support available if something goes wrong. It’s having someone to call, a clear next step, and practical support when you can no longer continue as planned.

And choosing the right level cover makes that reassurance even stronger. Compare the different levels of breakdown cover to see which best fits you.
