We’re supporting Highways England’s new ‘Go Left’ campaign. They’ve put together some simple steps to help keep you safe if you break down on a motorway.
The one thing to always remember? Go left.
Here’s their advice.
If you break down on the motorway:
- Put your LEFT indicators on
- Move into the LEFT lane
- Exit LEFT at the next junction/services, or
- Exit LEFT into an emergency area or hard shoulder
- Put your hazards lights on
- Get behind a safety barrier where there is one, and keep well away from moving traffic
- Call Highways England on 0300 123 5000 then a breakdown provider for help
If you cannot do the above, or in an emergency, stay in your vehicle, keep seatbelts and hazard lights on. Then call 999 immediately.

This from the organisation being sued for manslaugter for removing hard shoulders!
Smart!! What’s smart about removing an emergency lane.
What a waste of the extra £5m of OUR money, handed to Highways England to try to browbeat us into believing that All Lane Running Smart Motorways are anything other than death traps. The very name is (quite rightly) toxic, and the theft of our hard shoulder will never, ever be accepted by the British motoring public. Sadly, more will die needlessly before Grant Shapps or, more likely, his replacement sees sense, does the right thing and instructs Highways England to permanently close the new left lane, instantly restoring our lifeline, cost-free. Please make your feelings known to the Transport Select Committee, who are currently investigating this fatally-flawed scheme. Every voice will help to rid our country of All Lane Running Smart Motorways, and make motoring safer for everyone. Cheers.
