Coronavirus: our latest updates

Latest update: 19 July 2021

We’re still here for you if you need us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Keeping our customers and our team safe is always our priority. Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve been regularly updating our services and COVID procedures to make sure that everyone stays safe. You’ll find all of the changes we’ve made, and some important motoring advice, below.

Please make sure you read all of the sections that apply to you.

Road safety and vehicle maintenance advice

The Department For Transport has important advice for anyone travelling. We recommend reading it all here.

Highways England has some handy tips on how to check your tyre pressure (and why it’s so important that you do). It’s definitely worth checking out here.

If you’re planning on driving regularly again for the first time in a while, or if you’ve got a long drive ahead of you for a staycation, make sure your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition. You can read our car maintenance advice here.

Looking to get breakdown cover?

To get breakdown cover in the UK, or across the UK and Europe, please visit this page.

If you’re looking to buy cover in Europe only, please read the ‘Important update on European cover’ section further down this page. Once you’ve read that, you can get cover here.

What to do if you break down in the UK

The safety of our customers and staff remains our top priority, so there are some steps we’ll need you to take, depending on your situation.

If you’re isolating due to potentially having the virus, because someone in your home has shown symptoms, or because you’ve come into contact with someone with the virus, we can only help you after your isolation period is over.

If you’re not isolating (or once your isolation is over), follow the steps below, depending on your situation when you break down.

If you break down (and you’re not towing anything)

We need you to use the free Green Flag app to arrange your rescue, if you can. We’re expecting our phone lines to be very busy over the summer, so the app is the quick and easy way for you to get our help.

Make sure your app is up to date, as you can now use it to request a rescue on a motorway.

If you break down in an unsafe location or when towing something

If you’ve broken down in a potentially dangerous location, or if you’re towing something, please do not use the app. Instead, call us on 0800 400 600.

Any customers with Business breakdown cover or an Excess policy should also call us on 0800 400 600 if you break down.

Changes to our service when you break down

While it’s no longer a legal requirement for people to wear masks in England, we’re asking any customers (that can) to wear a mask when we come to help. This is just as a precaution to keep both you and our technician safe. Please also keep wearing a mask if you’re in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales.

An important update on European cover

First and foremost, before you travel or purchase any European cover from us, we need you to check the GOV website for the latest advice.

We’re still able to offer you cover across Europe, but there are some temporary limitations as we work within the guidelines set out by different countries.

If you purchase Single-trip or Annual Multi-trip European cover, but then have to cancel your trip and your policy, there won’t be cancellation fees. Additionally, if you have our Euro Plus cover but won’t be travelling to Europe, get in in touch and you can downgrade your cover for free.

Depending on the country you’re in, and the COVID situation within that country, there may be localised issues that impact our service if you break down. But, we will always help you as quickly and effectively as we can, 24/7.

Any customers who already have European cover, don’t worry, you’re still covered. This is the case for any customers with an active Single-trip European, Annual Multi-trip European, or Euro Plus policy. However, remember to always check the latest Government advice before travelling.

Please note, if you travel against FCO advice, we may not be able to help you if you break down.

What to do if you can no longer afford your cover

If you have a reduced income due to Coronavirus, and can no longer afford your monthly cover payments, we can review your situation and see if there’s a way to help. This could mean changing your cover level, moving your payment dates, or arranging a payment deferral.

For detailed information, please visit our FAQ page here.

What to do if your cover no longer meets your needs

If you no longer need certain cover features, due to your circumstances changing because of the pandemic, please get in touch. We can review your cover and look into moving you to a different cover level, so you’re only paying for what you need.

You can get in touch here.
