Discount new cars are available if you know where to look. Dealerships will sell some of the country’s most popular cars with thousands of pounds taken off the sticker price. It means that in some cases new models are actually cheaper than nearly-new used cars. According to online car broker AutoeBid, motors such as the Ford Focus and Nissan Qashqai – the third and fifth best-selling cars in the UK so far this year – are available with huge discounts.

Which discount new cars have the most money off?

AutoeBid says buyers can get the most money off the Renault Grand Scenic. Although its sticker price is £23,185, dealers will sell it for £16,461, a discount of 28 per cent. The reason is this model is about to be replaced and Renault’s dealers are desperate to clear the decks before a new much funkier version of the Grand Scenic goes on sale late this year.

Other big sellers with big discounts

The third biggest selling car in the UK is the Ford Focus. According to AutoeBid you can get a 24 per cent discount on the £22,645 sticker price meaning it could be yours for £16,802. The Hyundai i30 has 26 per cent slashed from its price tag. This moves its price from £20,590 to £15,079. The Nissan Qashqai could be bought for £21,612 rather than £26,310, an 18 per cent discount. Other popular cars with big discounts include the SEAT Leon, Vauxhall Zafira, BMW 3-Series, Fiat 500 and Citroen Grand C4 Picasso.

How these discount new cars compare to used cars

Some of the discounts are such that it’s actually cheaper to buy a new version than it is to buy a used nearly new model. For example a 65-reg SEAT Leon will cost £17,505 compared to £16,668 for a new model with discount. And while a used BMW 3 Series will cost £37,040, a new version with discount will be £32,993.

Why are these discount new cars on the list?

The cars that you can get the best discounts on are upmarket models. With the Ford Focus it’s cars with a 2.0-litre engine. In terms of the Nissan Qashqai it’s the 1.6 turbo diesel with four-wheel drive in the mid-range N-Connecta trim. The reason all the cars on the list are big sellers is they sit in the sectors that are the most competitive in terms of appealing to buyers.

How can car dealerships give such big discounts?

AutoeBid works by encouraging car dealerships to bid for customers’ trade. Rather like a reverse auction, those that offer the lowest price are successful. Managing director of AutoeBid, Chris Greener, said: “The reasons some makers are happier to discount depends on factors such as production targets, competing models and ultimate position in the vehicle’s lifecycle.” Car dealerships are given tough targets by the manufacturers with big cash bonuses for meeting them. In many cases these bonuses are larger than the profit margin on the cars themselves so sometimes dealerships can sell cars at a loss but still make money.

The car industry follows the rules of supply and demand. Therefore, cars that are popular with buyers and in short supply, such as the new Volvo XC90, Kia Sportage, BMW M2 and Range Rover Evoque Convertible, don’t feature discounts at all.

      Hi Bernard. You can contact any national Skoda retailer; they will be happy to do business with you, regardless of location, and should even deliver the car. However, also try websites such as Car Wow, Drive The Deal and Broadspeed. These sites effectively put your business out to tender with franchised Skoda dealers, and the dealers make their best offer on the specific model your require.
